E>C> Issue #10
12/18/09

Hey all, To start I would like to say that I am proud to present an illustration that was done by <hichrisgeorges@gmail.com>. Isn’t it great? Its attached to this issue if you would like to see it. Thanks again for sending that. Also you can now send your weekly music submission to the new official E>C> email address: email.collective@gmail.com. An issue comes out every Friday in the afternoon, so send in your submissions before that. I am still trying to compile a mix of “The worst songs by your favorite bands”… so please send suggestions of songs that would fit on this mix. So far I have 10. Without further adieu:

Strawberry Switchblade - The BBC Recordings

The early stuff they did, these recordings, and various demos, the unreleased stuff, is beautiful and so sincere, real gems! By the mid 80’s, the songs begin to feel over-worked and over-produced and way too pop-ish, including their album and their big hit “Since Yesterday” which I am not a fan of. . But yeah, these are some of my favorite songs! The song “Trees and Flowers” is about agoraphobia, which band member Jill suffered from. The 1982 John Peel session features James Kirk from Orange Juice on the bass. FRACTION – MOON BLOOD (1970)
Early L.A. stoner rock with howling, drug addled Jim Morrison-esque vocals. The singer really sounds like he’s having a nervous breakdown. The lyrics seem to mostly deal with Christianity, not in a preachy way, but more in a overwhelming paranoid “what does it all mean, maaan” crisis kinda way. Y’know? Great guitars too. Fans of the Doors, Roky Erickson, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, or any 70s hard rock will really dig this.

INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER – SOV GOTT ROSE-MARIE (1968)
Swedish Power Trance!! Post-Parson Sound, Pre-Harvest/Trad Gras Och Stenar! Organic, repetitive Psych-Folk/Rock/Drone. Insanely Good!! http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9OKQBOIV Kraftwerk- Kraftwerk 4 (LIVE!) (1971) WOAH! Early Kraftwerk (Ralf and Florian) with Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother Pre-Neu! Sounds like Forcefield jamming over Sabbath/Funkadelic/Can!! This album is a rockin’ mindblower!! http://www.mediafire.com/file/zhdt2i1zemy/Kraftwerk

Solid Space – Space Museum (1982)
Typical 80’s minimal new wave, clean guitar dirty vocals, 70’s electronics, kinda makes me want a cigarette. Surprisingly this tape was the only release by this UK band.

Hamilton Bohannon- Essential Dancefloor Artists Volume:4
Motown great, Hamilton Bohannon! Originally Stevie Wonder’s drummer and later went on to front his own band. Its really funky stuff… deep funk! You can listen to it anywhere! This compilation comes with hits like “South African Man” and “Disco Stomp” . Johnny Marr loved Bohannon as a kid and said that “Disco Stomp” influenced such Smiths songs as “How soon is now?”, mixing the Bo Diddley chord-chugs with a dance floor beat.

This week I’m taking a slight step back. Big Star has been and continues to be one of my all time favorite bands, and I know this opinion is not unshared on the E>C>. Rather than subject you to some verbose account of mine about how “Thirteen” is a crystallization of pop perfection and a hyper-vivid placeholder for an adolescent memory I don’t have, I give you Michael Chabon’s review of the box set from the latest McSweeney’s installment; Panorama (PDF attached.) If only all box sets came reviewed by Pulitzer prize-winning novelists… Enjoy!

Added bonus, as we approach our most gluttonous of seasons, I offer up this list of food songs I stumbled across (BP, this is also my olive branch for ignoring wave):

The Fugs epic second album.

Experience the majesty of freedom induced
by complete surrender to carnal passions, complete with a totally
nihilistic moral persepective.  May provoke identity crisis or cause
unprepared listeners to suffer other forms of psychic distresss.
