E>C> Issue #11
1/1/10

Hey all,

For everyone that is new, this is the email collective. It is a music newsletter that comes out every Friday afternoon, where anyone can submit and share the music that we have been listening to as an open forum. As well as music, you can also submit drawings, articles, videos or whatever and I will post them in this newsletter. To make a submission you can either find the music on a blog (the best way to do this is google search “{the band you want to post}+{the specific album by the band}+blogspot”). If you can’t find the album, but have it on your computer, you can get a free mediafire account and upload the music that way. Its best to use mediafire or megaupload. Rapidshare is really annoying, but I understand that sometimes its the only way. Its also a good idea to download a program like Stuffit Archive Manager to create zipfiles that can be easily uploaded and downloaded onto mediafire. After you find the album you want to submit, then write a little something about why you like it or write about the band and how you found out about them or whatever. Its up to you. Then submit them to email.collective@gmail.com

That being said, I forgot to post an issue last week due to christmas. Sorry again. Nobody really sent anything but there was a few thing people posted and I added them on to this week. Its like that episode of Pete & Pete where they decided to celebrate christmas everyday. One thing that I wanted to post was a Christmas album that I really liked that the band Low released. Here is a link to that if you are interested (http://www.mediafire.com/?znixtjmy2tc). I also made a Xmas mix that you can get here: (http://www.mediafire.com/?mtmwu5yjzuz)

******In this issue I wanted to feature videos by a friend of mine Rory Evenson-Phair. We went to high school together. He posts videos regularly on his youtube channel that you can check out here: http://www.youtube.com/user/icerobocop. My favorite videos by him is  ”Horse: The Movie pt 1 & 2″ and  “SKATERZ: Quest for Skatepark” (http://www.youtube.com/user/icerobocop#p/u/5/kjuTBqrQACQ), which is like a mixture of romantic skateboard coming to age comedy and the “The Blair Witch Project.” Rory also does amazing comics and illustrations that you can see here: http://www.scarfacebros.oktonauts.com/croc.html . Attached to this email is a cool drawing he did.*******

Alright, heres the music:

Ferrante And Teicher – Adventure In Carols (1956)
Some very different instrumental christmas music. These guys are known for their atmospheric compositions with prepared pianos and orchestras.

Tindersticks-Live At Bloomsbury Theatre (1991)
Often compared the Nick Cave and the Bad Sees, Tindersticks are kindred spirit but mostly because they pull from the same sad-sack influences like Scott Walker, Lee Hazelwood, and Serge Gainsbourg. Here with a full orchestra, recorded after their second album/masterpiece Tindersticks have created one of the best live experiences I’ve ever heard committed to record. It works as a whole piece, building into a climax with the songs Jism, drunk tank  and Mistakes (one of the most moving songs I’ve ever heard due to the epic, sweeping string arrangement at the end.) . The orchestra and horns are sometimes noisy often totally beautiful.  This is a real experience.

Nightshadow – Square Root of Two (1968)
Beatles vocal harmonies, fuzz guitar, overtly sexual and druggy lyrics, insane production tricks, A LOT of fun! Great acid punk! The song “Hot Rod” should have been on the driving mix (ratfarts!) : “There once was a girl/ her name was denise/ she couldnt ride at all without some transmission grease/All the girls are mad about my hot rod!”

Black Pus – #4 All Aboard the Magic Pus (2008)
Brian Chippendale’s solo project and his most accessible, poppy album. Catchy synth lines, bombasstic effected drums,  strangled by fx sing song! Sugar Coated Armageddon!

Coven – Witchcraft (Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls) (1969)
Great album cover! Early satanic American garage rock that toured and worked very closely with Anton Lavey. With a sound almost identical to Jefferson Airplane with a little bit of CA Quintet and maybe some Ellen Foley of Meatloaf, Coven mixed a traditional late 60s early 70s sound with ritualistic satanic chanting and occult themes. Only playing a handful of live shows, one notable show organized by Anton Lavey in Detroit that was suppose to be comparable a to satanist Woodstock. Interesting fact: the guitarist of Coven’s name is Oz Osborne and their first track is titled Black Sabbath. Coincidence? I dunno. My favorite song is “White Witch of Rose Hell.”

Lou Reed – The Phantom of Rock Live (1973)
A live Lou Reed show in his native little NYC i. At the point in Reed’s career he was on the cusp of finally breaking through, weeks before this show achieving his only US billboard hit “Walk on the Wild Side.” The concert is a mixture of Velvet’s songs and songs from “Transformer”, Lou Reed has never sounded better. He does a beautifully bubble-gum-pop-sweet version of “Waiting for my Man”  and “Heroin”.

Renaissance Noire – Royaumont (1994)
A great introduction to the genre that is Neoclassic Coldwave.
Parisian band Renaissance Noire released this album in ‘93 as a
compilation of their own work. I dig the last couple of songs most.
Medieval, ethereal and perilous…though devoid of any real emotional
commitment.

Thats the end of this issue. Keep submitting! For next week I thought it would be cool if people made a top 10 of 2009 list. It should be music, but it could be whatever you want.
