John Bender- I Don’t Remember Now (1980)

Release from 1980, cincinnati, Ohio. It is some distant home-brewed obscuro shitsurf pop, really worth listening to seriously and light-mindedly. The rhythms are “urgent and dark,” also great to be hesitant about yet delve into after keeping patience; you shall be rewarded with deep atmospheric velvet.

Credits:
john bender: voice electronics, words and music
jack gorski: words: 36a2, 36a3, 31a4; music: 36a2
ron hammad: engineering

FAUST: words and music on 27B4 (cover)

Scott Walker- Scott 4 (1969)

There is a really good documentary on the mysterious Scott Walker that you can watch live-streaming on Netflix called 30 Century Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBMJ79ly3B4&feature=related). Brian Eno, Johnny Marr, Jonny Greenwood, Jarvis Cocker, and others make appearances on it and David Bowie was the executive producer. Its a good movie. This is Scott Walker’s 5th solo album after briefly parting from The Walker Brothers. It was considered to be a flop compared to his other solo albums but it’s a cult classic and as good or better that Scott 3 , 2, or 1. The production is great, lots of stings and dark pop sound-scapes. Scott Walker has the most amazing voice and could be one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

Scott Walker-Scott 3 (1969)

This was Scott Walker’s last commercially successful top 10 UK record. Its really good and beautifully composed and orchestrated. The first track “Its Raining Today” is appropriate. Vegas lounge music mixed with dark sounds and drones.

The Walker Brothers- Nite Flights (1978)

A late Walker Brothers album that is really crazy. It was later marketed as a post-punk album with a different album cover. But its really different than other Walker Brothers albums. It has a dirty disco sound but with insane guitar solos. Check out the solo in “Shut Out.”

Stack Waddy- Stack Waddy (1971) / Bugger Off! (1972)

The amazing and dirty British R ‘n’ B group Stack Waddy. Signed to John Peel’s Dandelion records, Peel writes that Stack Waddy were the first punk band in his autobiography. He also said they were the first band to piss on their audience. Lots of great guitar solos and  raw renditions of classics like Roadrunner, Susie Q, and Captain Beefheart’s Willie the Pimp. This album was hard to find but I uploaded it, so get it.

The Monochrome Set- Love Zombies (1981)

The second album by 80s art new wave/ velvet post-punk band The Monochrome Set. Made up of members of The Heartbreakers and The B-Sides, and Adam Ant was briefly in the band. Jazzy rhythm guitar mixed with prince-of-persia style stabs on lead guitar. Great sound, great album. Except I hate the song “R.S.V.P”.

Jonathan Halper- “Leaving My Old House Goodbye/ I am a Hermit ” Music from Kenneth Anger’s Puce Moments  (1949)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRm3B4T5SkU

I cant find any other music from Jonathan Halper except for  these two songs that were used in Kenneth Anger film Puce Moments). I read that he became a Buddhist and fell off the face of the earth. It reminds me of Syd Barrett, mixed with Mick Jagger, and early T. Rex.

The Misunderstood- Before the Dream Faded (1969)

The Misunderstood had a couple songs on  The Nuggets Volume 2 compilations like “Children of the Sun” and “I Unseen.” But they weren’t just your average fun in the sun California garage rock band. In fact, I don’t think they were into the sun at all. Their guitar work is really amazing and scary! Check out the weird lazer sound the guitarist is able to get on “Children of the Sun” and “Who do you love.”  John Peel was their manager for a short time when he was living in California during the 60s. He thought the band would be a big success in England so the band moved there and lived in Peel’s mother’s house. He said that The Misunderstood taught the English to hang out.

Lifelover-Erotik (2007)

demented swedish black metal pop.

misery, dread, perversion, and a depressive breed of optimism,

delivered via buzzing guitars, shrieking, epic guitar riffs, double

bass drums, atmospheric jangle, and children singing about jesus.

It’s a strange recipe, and one that seems like it shouldn’t work,

but it does.

twisted, alienating, and addictive.

My Own Sweet, based in Burlington, VT and later Boston during the mid-90’s were the cream of the crop of Burlington’s (at the time) vibrant local scene.  This EP, released on Club Fun Records (http://www.bradleysalmanac.com/clubfub/) was recorded prior to their departure to Boston, and features the noteworthy singe “Pill For Faster Living”.

Cosmic Jokers- Galactic Supermarket (1974)

The  only krautrock supergroup. Head of Ohr & Brain records, Rolf Ulrich-Kaiser, does too much acid with Timothy Leary, realizes krautrock isn’t cutting it, dreams up Kosmiche (psy-phy: psychic/physical), holds a bunch of acid parties and invites the krautrock elite, feeds them tons of drugs and gets them to jam, records the sessions without the musicians knowing, edits all the jams together and releases 4 lps of the craziest psychedelic mindmelters. Manuel Gottsching of Ash Ra Tempel walks into a record store, hears this album, asks the clerk “who’s playing”, and is shown the album with his picture on the cover. SLIMED!!!

Deep City Soul- Eccentric Soul (2006)

The Deep City label compilation in the Eccentric Soul series is the answer to anyone who has ever wondered what the 60s soul scene was like in Miami. Which, I’m sure, includes everyone. Helene Smith is especially great.

The Avalanches – Since I Left You. (2000)

Easy vote for album of the decade.  Sample based music before it was cool….approximately 3,500 vinyl samples. Goes well with long drives, short walks, moments of extreme happiness, moments of crippling depression. Timeless.

Cass McCombs – Catacombs (2009)

Fantastic new record.  Bizarre, yet endearing arrangements, and songwriting as good as I’ve ever heard.
